Following a rise in COVID-19 cases among the community, Nigerian authorities are promising to provide more security for healthcare staff.
Chikwe Ihekweazu, Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, said the positive coronavirus test of 75 health workers over the past week on Monday was troubling.
Ihekweazu advises healthcare workers in any case to show caution and presume COVID-19 before it is ruled out. And then, he cautioned, the possibility of infection still exists.
Ihekweazu also said the NCDC would soon make rapid diagnostic test kits available as an additional form of security in more health facilities.
According to Health Minister Osagie Ehanire, more than 800 healthcare staff in Nigeria have been infected with the virus since June, the Anadolu Agency reported.
At least 20 doctors died from the virus within one week last month, the Nigerian Medical Association reported.
According to the Covid Information Center at Johns Hopkins University, Nigeria has reported more than 131,000 COVID-19 infections and 1,607 deaths.
