Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, Mauritania’s former president, was sentenced to prison on Tuesday night.
This ruling by a court overseeing an investigation into potential corruption charges comes only days after the former president refused to report to the police as required by his house detention restrictions.
Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, two previous Prime Ministers, and many businesspeople were indicted with corruption, money laundering, and unlawful enrichment in March.
Mauritania’s former president claims he is being targeted in an attempt to keep him out of politics, but he has sworn not to go into exile.
His lawyers have frequently asserted that he should be granted constitutional immunity under Article 93.
Since stepping down as president of the West African state in 2019, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has been investigated for his activities during his ten years in office, culminating in a year-long investigation that resulted in the seizure of assets worth 114 million dollars in March.
