In the midst of the fanfare, President Yoweri Museveni returned on Thursday from his rural home in Western Uganda to the capital Kampala, where he has been since being proclaimed the winner of the divisive election in mid-January.
Dressed in yellow, the theme color of Museveni’s ruling National Resistance Movement faction, crowds of supporters lined the highway as the President’s convoy drove along.
To briefly address the crowds, he made stops in different cities.
Museveni’s supporters paid little attention to social distance, despite accusing the opposition of assembling mass demonstrations during a pandemic, and many were not wearing masks.
On his way to the capital, he drove through Buganda region, where scores of his ministers and a vice president were defeated by the opposition in the race for parliament.
Observers have said that the pompous return was a victory lap meant to silence those doubting Museveni’s re-election.
Meanwhile, the lawyers of Bobi Wine are rushing to court on Thursday to obtain orders for their freedom.
Since election day, Wine has been held under house detention with troops surrounding his residence.
