Egypt, an African nation with a very rich history and a vibrant economy, is becoming the technological hub of Africa. The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics has spurred revolutions in so many industries, and the health sector is no exception. Egypt is gradually embracing these cutting-edge technologies to enhance its healthcare system, and AI and data analytics offer promising solutions that would shape the future of the healthcare industry.

Egypt has a complex healthcare system that combines the public and private sectors. The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) is saddled with the responsibility of overseeing and regulating healthcare services in the country. The government of Egypt provides healthcare services to its teeming population through public hospitals and clinics. Private healthcare facilities also play a vital role in catering to the population’s needs. It helps cushion the pressure on the public health sector.

According to Oxford Business Group (2018), the health industry in Egypt faces some challenges. One of the most significant challenges of Egypt’s healthcare system is the uneven distribution of resources, which has led to disparities in accessing quality healthcare services. The people hardest hit by these inequalities are those living in rural areas, as there are limited healthcare facilities and medical personnel in those areas. The quality of healthcare services is also inconsistent and unreliable. Many citizens who have the wherewithal have sought the services of private healthcare, but low-income earners and the less privileged are denied access to standardised healthcare services.

The healthcare sector is also plagued with financial constraints as there is limited funding, thus limiting their capacity to upgrade facilities, purchase modern medical equipment, adopt advanced medical technologies, and provide adequate training for healthcare professionals. According to Al Jazeera (2020), the population of Egypt is large and rapidly growing, which puts additional pressure on the healthcare system. In spite of the large population, there is a shortage of healthcare professionals in Egypt, especially those with expertise in certain specialties. Rural areas are worst hit by this shortage of health professionals. An increasing burden of chronic diseases stretches the resources of the healthcare sector thin; there aren’t adequate preventive measures and management strategies in place. The COVID-19 pandemic also exposed the vulnerability of Egypt’s healthcare system, and a significant portion of Egypt’s population does not even have health insurance coverage, limiting their access to essential healthcare services.

The challenges faced by Egypt’s healthcare sector are many. The adoption of AI and data analytics, from improving patients’ care to optimising medical research, would go a long way towards addressing them.

Role of AI in Egypt’s Healthcare

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. This allows them to perform tasks that typically require human cognitive abilities such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making. Sometimes referred to as machine learning, AI systems are designed to analyse data, identify patterns, make predictions, and continuously improve their performance relying on new information without the need for programming for specific tasks (TechTarget, 2023).

Artificial intelligence has a lot of applications. In the medical field, AI can mimic human learning in the analysis, presentation, and understanding of complex medical and healthcare data; it can even exceed human capabilities with precision and accuracy. The adaptation of AI and data analytics would bring about transformative changes in the healthcare industry, leading to improved patient care and more efficient medical research.

Artificial intelligence would play a vital role in Egypt’s healthcare sector. Data analytics would facilitate the analysis of vast amounts of medical data not only in Egypt or Africa but across the world, according to Business Monthly Egypt (2023). This would enable researchers to identify patterns, trends, and potential breakthroughs that would advance medical research and the development of new and improved treatments for various diseases. AI can also help in diagnosing medical conditions, predicting disease outcomes using analysed data, and personalising treatments based on individual patient characteristics. This would improve treatment outcomes.

Medical images such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans can be analysed by artificial intelligence with high accuracy, which would assist healthcare professionals in diagnosing diseases at an early stage. With the ability to analyse vast amounts of data in a relatively short period of time, AI can be used to predict health risks, bringing about a shift from reactive to proactive healthcare. AI can also analyse extensive databases of drug compounds, biological interactions, and clinical trial data, identifying potential new drugs and speeding up drug development processes. These drugs can also be tailored to individual patients based on their genetic makeup. In essence, this would bring novel treatments to patients more efficiently. Healthcare providers in Egypt would be able to deliver care to patients outside traditional clinical settings using AI-driven telemedicine platforms and remote monitoring tools. This would help in reaching underserved populations and ensuring continuous care for patients with chronic medical conditions. In cases of emergencies or critical situations,

AI and data analytics would provide real-time decision support to healthcare professionals, assisting them in making informed and evidence-based decisions for patients. Virtual health assistants and AI-powered chatbots would engage with patients, providing health information, answering questions, and offering support, enhancing patients’ engagement and satisfaction. Some of these AI-based health initiatives are already springing forth in the private and public health sectors, according to the International Finance Corporation (IFC) (2021).

Artificial intelligence would also influence policymakers and health administrators in making data-driven decisions about resource allocation, public health initiatives, and system improvements. This would greatly help in policy and planning. Data collection, analysis, and interpretation can be expedited with data analytics. This would accelerate research, leading to faster discoveries and advances in Egypt’s medical field. AI would also improve the operational efficiency of Egypt’s healthcare sector. These systems can streamline administrative tasks, optimise resource allocation, and enhance workflow efficiency in healthcare facilities. With AI, a lot of time can be saved, medical errors can be reduced to their nearest minimum, and healthcare resources can be better utilised.

According to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Egypt, the government of Egypt is making efforts to bridge the gap between theory and practise on AI by supporting cutting-edge research and applied activities on AI-related priorities. Bianca Wright (2023) reports that the government is looking at ways to develop AI capabilities in various sectors, including launching its first AI faculty at Kafr El Sheikh University.

AI systems used in Egypt’s healthcare sector would continue to learn and improve using new data and adapt their algorithms to improve accuracy and performance over time. This would ensure that healthcare practises stay updated with the latest medical knowledge.

The Challenges of AI in Egypt’s Healthcare

AI and data analytics would play a crucial role in transforming Egypt’s healthcare systems, bringing to the forefront numerous benefits and advancements that have the potential to revolutionise how healthcare is provided, managed, and experienced. However, there are challenges the North African country would face in its implementation of artificial intelligence in the health sector.

Although Egypt has a thriving economy, implementing AI and data analytics systems would be expensive. This requires investments in hardware and software, staff training and retraining, and continuous upgrades and maintenance. The healthcare sector in Egypt still faces challenges with funding and inadequate equipment to run its daily operations. Adopting AI in the healthcare sector, which requires a capital-intensive infrastructure, would be a challenge. Data privacy and security have become major concerns in all sectors of a country’s economy, and in the healthcare industry, it is a very sensitive issue. The protection of sensitive patients’ data is a primary concern, and healthcare organisations, both private and public, would have to ensure that there are robust data privacy measures in place to prevent unauthorised access, data infringement, and misuse of personal health information. There is a need for adequate data encryption, access controls, and secured data storage. This would safeguard patients’ privacy and encourage trust.

The quality and integrity of data are very important for reliable AI and data analytics outcomes. Distorted, incomplete, biassed, or inaccurate data can lead to erroneous conclusions and adversely affect patients’ care. In severe cases, this may endanger the lives of patients. There is a need to establish data governance protocols to maintain coherence, data quality, and data integrity. There are various regulatory frameworks, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of the United States and the Universal Health Insurance (UHI) Law of Egypt, that must be adhered to when implementing AI and data analytics in healthcare. It is important to meet these compliances to avoid legal consequences and maintain patients’ trust (National Library of Medicine, 2021).

In implementing the use of AI in healthcare, some ethical questions such as transparency in AI decision-making, patients’ consent, appropriate use of patient data, and potential biases in algorithms are raised. These ethical considerations need to be addressed by healthcare providers and policymakers in order to build trust and confidence in AI technologies. Integrating AI and data analytics systems with existing healthcare infrastructure would be complex; there is a need to ensure seamless operation between and among different systems and data sources. This synergy is critical to maximising their potential impact on patients’ care. AI algorithms can also be complex and difficult to interpret, which may lead to a lack of transparency in their decision-making processes. Explainability is crucial in healthcare to gain trust from both healthcare professionals and patients.

Egypt’s healthcare sector has in the past faced the challenges of a skilled workforce. Utilising AI and data analytics effectively requires a skilled workforce that is capable of managing and interpreting the technology. At present, the country has a shortage of professionals with the expertise needed to implement and operate AI-integrated systems. The situation is severe in remote places, such as rural areas. This calls for necessary training and development initiatives. The adoption of AI and data analytics may face resistance from healthcare professionals who are not familiar with these technologies or are afraid of their impact on traditional healthcare practices. These concerns need to be addressed, and proper training and retraining need to be provided to help overcome this resistance to change.

Future Prospects of AI in Egypt’s Healthcare

The adoption of artificial intelligence and data analytics systems in healthcare has a lot of prospects; it has the potential to create a more efficient, patient-centred, and effective healthcare system. By automating administrative tasks in the healthcare industry, the use of AI would save money, not only in Egypt but on a global scale (Insider Intelligence, 2023).

Egypt would benefit fully from the promises that AI adoption holds. However, it is important that policymakers in Egypt put certain things in place: the existing healthcare infrastructure needs to be upgraded and advanced medical technologies adopted in order to improve the overall health system. There is a need for a consistent standard of care across all healthcare providers, be they government or private. Effective planning and resource management need to be in place to cater to the growing population. Training and retraining skilled healthcare workers and ensuring that adequate, quality training and development opportunities are available to health workers all over the country, even in remote areas,

With the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence and data analytics in Egypt’s healthcare sector, it is important to address ethical considerations, data privacy, and security to ensure responsible, safe, and sustainable implementation. These challenges and concerns require a holistic approach, which involves collaboration among healthcare providers, policymakers, technology experts, and government regulatory bodies. This would bring about transparency and accountability.

Artificial intelligence and data analytics have an important role to play in Egypt’s healthcare industry; their impact on patients’ outcomes and the overall healthcare landscape cannot be overemphasised, and this is expected to grow significantly. Nonetheless, ensuring patients’ privacy, data security, and ethical use of these technologies should be made a priority.
