On Sunday, Kampala police officers apprehended many persons who had gathered at a bar in contravention of a nightly coronavirus curfew.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni ordered the closure of schools and the prohibition of non-essential movement between districts about a week ago in an attempt to halt a disturbing trend in the country’s recent spike of Covid-19 cases.
The suspects were discovered drinking in the institution at 10 p.m., three hours after the curfew began, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire.
The president gave a directive that all businesses by 7 (p.m.) should be closed and this by 10 (p.m.) was open and likewise we shall be having statements from the owners of the premise(s) to understand why they were open by that time and the fact that some of the suspects were found drinking and during the operation we saw a couple of them run away, flee the scene” said Luke Owoyesigyire, police spokesperson.
Uganda is battling a new wave of coronavirus cases, which has prompted the continued crackdown.
Recently, the government has recorded over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases every day, which is among the highest figures the country has seen during the pandemic.
