Although Christians around the world anticipate Easter on April 4, the Tanzanian Police Force has stated that it does not expect to see the same level of celebrations as in previous years.
“But it is our hope that Easter mass will be conducted peacefully,” a statement released Thursday said.
Following the death of President John Magufuli, the country is officially in mourning for 21 days.
Dr. Magufuli died on March 17 at Dar es Salaam’s Mzena Hospital and was buried on March 26 in Chato, in the Geita region of northwestern Tanzania.
Tanzania’s President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, declared state mourning for 21 days following Magufuli’s death, as mandated by the National Funeral Act.
The official time of mourning began on March 18 and will conclude on April 7. This time frame includes Easter.
According to a statement released by police spokesperson David Misime, the police force will be ready to ensure that the Christian group worships in a safe atmosphere while other people go about their everyday lives..
“Regional police commanders and forces are well prepared to ensure the security situation continues to improve and to take strong action against all those who violate safety laws during this period,” he said.
