It will be a crucial week for those who wish for long-lasting peace in Libya,
Participants in the inter-Libyan dialogue, supported by the UN, are meeting on Monday to choose a new Prime Minister and a new Presidential Council.
A change that would help direct the transition, as many expect to see elections in December 2021 in the conflict-ridden country.
Until Friday, the 75 Libyan delegates will have to choose from a list of 45 candidates, including key political figures from both the Eastern and Western authorities who have been battling for power for years, but also from the country’s South.
A dialogue has been conducted in neighbouring Tunisia since November 2020 to attempt to end the bloodshed that followed the collapse of Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
Libya has never been closer to seeking peace since the Arab Spring, with the UN-backed Government of National Unity and the Tobruk Parliament supported by General Khalifa Haftar agreeing to a ceasefire in October.
